Body Horror Is Back! Reviews of 'Alien: Romulus,' 'The Substance,' and 'A Different Man'
Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are both fantastic in Coralie Fargeat's wild horror movie, which hits theaters in September.
Happy Thursday, folks!
Yesterday, I was a contestant on Let’s Make a Deal, so I spent the majority of the day in a banana costume while clapping like a seal and trying to get the attention of Wayne Brady, who was decked out in some fly Versace shoes.
I can’t say whether I won any money, got “zonked,” or was even picked from the audience, but what I can say is that I had fun, and I met some cool young people, including a beautiful aspiring young actress from Hawaii named Danica Luz, and a recent high school graduate by the name of Aditya Banerjee who is heading to UC Berkeley in the fall to study neuroscience, and has already founded a successful protein bar company you can check out at EatPosana.com.
I only had to chat with Banerjee for five minutes to know that he’s going places — mark my words. I’ve got a unique eye for young talent, and he impressed the hell out of me.
So if you’re a Hollywood power player of color — I’m thinking of everyone from directors James Wan and M. He’s the kind of young entrepreneur I’d bet on myself if I had any money to spare…
Today’s newsletter features a trio of reviews for body horror movies — Alien: Romulus, which creeps into theaters tonight; and the indie films The Substance and A Different Man, which don’t arrive until Sept. 20 but were previously reviewed by other critics out of Cannes and Sundance, respectively, making them fair game.
Given the timing of all three screenings, the body horror theme of this edition was simply too good to pass up, but I’ll be back later tonight with a second newsletter that’ll round up and break down all the news from the past two days.
