'American Psycho': 10 Stars Who Should Play Serial Killer Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s Movie
Plus, Natalie Portman teams up with Jenna Ortega, Sophie Turner tests for the lead in Amazon's 'Tomb Raider' series, and my thoughts on A24's 'Queer' trailer.
Good morning, folks! I had some technical difficulties that prevented me from posting last night, so here’s Tuesday’s newsletter, and I’ll be back later tonight, too!
On Monday night, I laid low and watched the first two episodes of Season 2 of Lioness, which absolutely rips. Zoe Saldaña ups the intensity even further this season — while being more mindful of tattoos — and it was nice to see Taylor Sheridan return in front of the camera. I’ve fallen behind on Tulsa King, so I’ve gotta catch up with that show next.
Tuesday was a doozy though, I gotta tell ya. I called Apple about a story I was planning to run regarding the source material for Season 2 of Presumed Innocent, and for what seems like the millionth time, the streamer’s comms exec picked up the phone and called the trades, which she has every right to do.
Just as I have every right to stop calling Apple, since every time I do, I get the short end of the stick — the old “we’ll call you right back,” only for them to call Deadline right back. If you’ve ever wondered where all my hair went, it went to days like today.
I believe it was mystery novelist Rita Mae Brown (not Albert Einstein) who once theorized that the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Well, I gave Apple another chance Tuesday morning, expecting a different result, and clearly, I must’ve been insane to do so.
Going forward, I’ll just spare myself the headache and I won’t call Apple about anything! Then, the headaches can be all theirs. After all, they don’t advertise, they don’t invite me to their movies — I’ll be paying to see Blitz this weekend — and technically, Apple TV+ still owes me $2,000 for moderating online Q&A’s for their Emmy contenders in the summer of 2022. How do you like them apples?
So… why, exactly, am I telling Apple my editorial plan only to watch as they send that plan to my biggest competitor? Great question, Jeff!
If you’re a publicist and I’m coming to you then it’s to have a conversation, me and you. Not me, you, and Deadline. I know I’m just a pimple on Apple’s ass, and execs at that streamer won’t care about me unless they have to… so I’ll just have to make them. I sure do hope they like surprises!
Before I wrap this little rant up, I’ll tell you that it was about 100 times worse before I had the good judgment to tone it down and not name the Apple exec who crossed me. Instead, I mercifully chose to spare her... because deep down, I’m a good guy. But the next one may not be so lucky — just try me! — so let this serve as a future warning to all.
Speaking of the future, my Apple coverage may be a little spotty, since I have no plans to call them to confirm anything anymore. Because no one — not even the almighty Apple — dictates what I write about or when, and I’m certainly not going to shut my mouth and let them walk all over me for fear of losing what little access I have. If they want to take away my precious screeners, so be it.
Anyway… today, you’ll read about my top 10 picks to play Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho remake, from Aaron Taylor-Johnson to Zendaya.
There are also items about Natalie Portman teaming up with Jenna Ortega and director Cathy Yan, Jessica Chastain and Brendan Fraser joining forces with fellow Oscar winner Al Pacino, the Wayans brothers returning to the Scary Movie franchise, the two actresses Amazon is testing for its Tomb Raider series, and the low tracking for the streamer’s holiday movie Red One.
