'Avengers 5 & 6': Russo Brothers in Talks to Return to MCU After Marvel Struggled to Find Someone Else

Plus, my thoughts on this year's Emmy nominations and Marvel's new trailers for 'Captain America 4' and 'Agatha All Along.'

Happy Wednesday, folks!

Last night, a buddy and I watched Shudder’s new horror movie Oddity, and though we both loved the opening sequence, he left my place disappointed some 90 minutes later, and I, too, was underwhelmed by Damian McCarthy’s film starring Gwilym Lee.

I wasn’t shocked to be let down by Oddity, but what shocked me was the film’s 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has 33 reviews. That means that 33 critics filed positive reviews — not one dissenting opinion in the bunch.

This is a problem, folks.

You can bury your head in the sand all you want, but there used to be a wide range of opinions among critics, and now, they all conform and largely like or dislike the same movies. It’s either that or Rotten Tomatoes is only publishing positive reviews, saving negative reviews for closer to Opening Day, or publicists are only giving critics who liked the film access to the film and permission to publish their review prior to Opening Day.

I don’t know what else could possibly explain this phenomenon, for in the world in which I live, if you take 33 random people and ask them to agree on something — no matter what it is — it will prove to be impossible. 33 people can’t even agree on who the U.S. President is right now!

I know that some of The 33 loved Oddity, and some of The 33 merely liked it, but how all 33 critics can think this movie merits a positive review blows my mind. Oddity is a slow, confusing, and largely a waste of time. The only question is who you’re going to believe — me, or 33 critics, most of whom you’ve never even heard of because Rotten Tomatoes will accredit anyone these days in an effort to be more inclusive.

The whole system is broken — and an utter joke. You’d have to be naive or blind not to see this. But hey, feel free to watch Oddity and make up your own mind. No one’s stopping you, I’m just trying to help you make the most of your free time.

Anyway, in tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read about the Russo brothers returning to the MCU to direct the next two Avengers movies, and my thoughts on Marvel’s trailers for Captain America: Brave New World and its Disney+ series Agatha All Along. Plus, I break down today’s Emmy nominations and question how Jennifer Jason Leigh could possibly have been snubbed for Fargo. Insanity, people… pure insanity!
