Happy Thursday, folks!
I’m on the mend and I’ve been resting up, though I’ll admit, I did stay up late last night binging the new season of Reacher, which returns to Prime Video on Feb. 20 and is well worth the wait, though I can say no more than that yet as S3 remains under embargo — same with the six episodes of The White Lotus that I watched the night before.
Sundance is now in the rear-view mirror, but deals continue to trickle out of the festival, as Netflix spent $5 million to acquire the buzzy documentary The Perfect Neighbor, which could be an awards contender later this year, while MUBI shelled out for the thriller Lurker starring Theodore Pellerin and Archie Madekwe. Elsewhere, Sideshow and Janus Films nabbed Ira Sachs’ drama Peter Mujar’s Day starring Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall.
Of course, you shouldn’t even be thinking about these Sundance movies if you haven’t seen The Brutalist yet. If you haven’t been able to 3.5 hours at the theater, A24 has moved up the film’s VOD release date to Feb. 18 — the same day that Oscar voting ends.
Tonight’s newsletter features a hot scoop about Bill Skarsgård’s next film, while I lament the loss of what would’ve been Ezra Edelman’s next film — a six-part documentary about Prince that will no longer see the light of day.
Plus, there are items about Matthew McConaughey reteaming with writer-director Paul Greengrass, Joe Wright getting his hands on a hot spec script, Johan Renck teaming with Edward Berger, the new cast additions to S4 of Mayor of Kingstown, Lucasfilm’s new VP hire, Legendary’s latest IP play, and the trailer for Lionsgate’s thriller starring The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan.
