Exclusive: 'The Color Purple' Director Blitz Bazawule Shopping Movie About African Samurai Yasuke
Plus, my thoughts on Netflix's exec reorg, a fourth 'Bridget Jones' movie, A24's 'MaXXXine' trailer, and 'The Fall Guy.'
Happy Tuesday, folks!
I am currently in Las Vegas for CinemaCon, which is one of my favorite industry events each year. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a convention for theater owners, and it’s basically four days of movie trailers, as each studio gets a chance to present their upcoming slates.
Universal kicked off the week with a screening of The Fall Guy (review below), and WB will be presenting later this afternoon, so keep an eye out for the Joker: Folie à Deux trailer, among other goodies. I’ll be filing report cards for all the major studio presentations, so stay tuned for more on that front.
Hopefully, none of these movies will overpromise and underdeliver like a certain solar eclipse I was told I’d be able to see on Monday morning. I stood outside like an idiot, staring up at the sun, and when nothing happened, I decided to drive to Vegas, figuring I’d catch a glimpse of it on the road. Alas, it was a non-event, at least for me.
In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read about the new project that The Color Purple director Blitz Bazawule is shopping, a fourth Bridget Jones movie, Maude Apatow’s directorial debut, some Cannes updates, and a ton of casting news, plus my thoughts on The Fall Guy and A24’s trailer for MaXXXine.
