A Pair of Disney Scoops, the State of the Oscar Race, and Why Voters Will Make Timothée Chalamet Wait to Win

Plus, Brad Pitt reteams with David Ayer, Daisy Ridley's 'Star Wars' movie finds a new writer, and Zach Cregger's 'Resident Evil' reboot sparks a bidding war.

Happy Friday, folks!

Sundance is now underway, but it’s been pretty quiet in Park City outside of the requisite story about someone throwing up at a disturbing horror movie.

Yesterday, Deadline confirmed my scoop from last month about Robert Eggers writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for Sony’s TriStar Pictures banner. Huzzah!

By the way, for anyone who remains skeptical about Season 3 of Euphoria, I’m told that shooting is slated to start next week on Jan. 30.

This week, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds sought a gag order for Justin Baldoni’s pitbull lawyer Bryan Freedman, and trust me, folks — people don’t ask for a gag order if you’re spewing nonsense. They ask for a gag order when you’re telling the truth and they want to shut you up. I still can’t believe that Lively ever went down this path, but neither she nor Reynolds look very good here, and I’m betting that everyone will walk away regretting their part in this media circus. What a disaster…

Tonight’s newsletter takes a look at yesterday’s Oscar nominations and offers a pair of Disney scoops — one about Freakier Friday, the other about the studio’s Club 33 movie.

Plus, there are items about Brad Pitt reteaming with his Fury director David Ayer, Ruben Fleischer’s return to Lionsgate, Warner Bros. conjuring a director for Practical Magic 2, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new co-star and the trailer for Finn Wolfhard’s directorial debut Hell of a Summer, which I caught at the Toronto International Film Festival way back in 2023.
