Why James Gunn Needs to Leave Social Media, Find His Kathy Kennedy, and Let His Work at DC Speak for Itself

Plus, thoughts on the Golden Globe nominations, the latest 'Harry Potter' casting rumors, and the male lead in Season 2 of 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith.'

Happy Monday night, folks!

I’m back in Los Angeles tomorrow, and I’ve missed you, so if you’re around before the holidays, hit me up for breakfast or a drink after work. As you might imagine, I love to gossip…

Over the break, I watched David Gordon Green’s comedy Nutcrackers on Hulu, and while I was a little disappointed at first, I found myself quite charmed by the end of the movie, which really won me over in its final few minutes. It’s a modest movie starring Ben Stiller and four real-life brothers, but it has a ton of heart — which explains why critics didn’t like it. Most of them hate anything with emotion, which they consider schmaltzy.

On the plane ride back to L.A., I binged Peacock’s new series The Day of the Jackal and I loved it. It had me hooked from the start, and while Eddie Redmayne is fantastic as the title character, Lashana Lynch has really held her own opposite the Oscar winner. If she didn’t bring her A-game, this series might feel unbalanced, but as it stands, her investigative scenes are just as compelling as Redmayne’s sniper missions. Don’t miss this one!

I also caught Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut Y2K, and while I go way back with Kyle and thought that he was quite funny in his own movie, I can’t recommend the A24 film itself, which goes off the rails in its second half as it turns into a horror movie. Bummer…

Earlier today, I dropped a hot scoop about Jeremy Allen White joining the Star Wars universe, and in tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read my thoughts on the current state of DC Studios — riding high off awards love for The Penguin, the successful launch of Creature Commandos, and continued critical acclaim for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story — and why James Gunn would benefit from cutting back on social media. Plus, the latest on Superman and The Batman Part II.

There are also items about today’s Golden Globes nominations, last week’s Top 10 lists from AFI, the latest casting rumors from the world of Harry Potter, the male lead in Season 2 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and James Cameron’s deal with Meta. Plus, I weigh in on the trailer for Woody Harrelson’s deep sea thriller Last Breath.
