Exclusive: Jared Leto Offered Skeletor Role in Amazon’s 'Masters of the Universe' Movie

Plus, more on Sony's animated sequel 'Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse' from your friendly neighborhood speculator.

Happy Tuesday, folks!

Last night, I attended the TIFF premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, and while I can’t say I necessarily liked or even understood the movie, I was hugely impressed by Coppola’s bold, daring vision of the future and the fact that he was willing to risk his own fortune for the sake of his art.

The clear standouts among the cast are Aubrey Plaza and Shia LaBeouf, who seem to be on the same wavelength as Coppola and have fun with their wacky characters, and I also enjoyed Grace VanderWaal’s musical number.

Adam Driver delivers another bizarre performance as Coppola’s gifted protagonist, but I was simply not a fan of Nathalie Emmanuel — in this film or Peacock’s remake of The Killer. She’s not ready for prime time, in my opinion.

There are stretches where Megalopolis really does work, but for the most part, it’s a messy souffle that never quite comes together, as the message gets lost in the heightened theatrical delivery. Though I certainly respected the effort. Thanks to Lionsgate for the invite, as I’m glad I was in the room to hear Coppola sing a little ode to Ontario before the screening began.

At the Megalopolis screening, I met producer Zoë Worth and complimented her on her delightful action-comedy Thelma, which you really should see… with your grandmother(s), if possible. I also met filmmaker Gil Kenan, who teamed back up with pal Jason Reitman on Saturday Night, which I’ll be seeing in just a few hours followed by Brady Corbet’s 3.5-hour drama The Brutalist. Talk about a doubleheader!

I’m working on a ton of TIFF reviews this week — look for my Festival Awards on Thursday or Friday night — as well as one more big scoop.

But for now, in tonight’s newsletter, you can read about the Oscar-winning actor who has been offered the role of Skeletor in Amazon’s Masters of the Universe movie. There’s also a follow-up to yesterday’s Spider-Man report and a teaser trailer for the buzzy Donald Trump movie The Apprentice.
