The Search for John Stewart: 18 Actors Who Should Be Cast in DC's 'Lanterns' Alongside Kyle Chandler

Plus, a look at Martin Scorsese’s schedule now that two projects he hoped to shoot this year have stalled — one about Jesus and the other about Frank Sinatra.

It’s Wednesday, folks, and hooray for Hollywood, for the work week is more than half over.

Last night, I watched Gene Stupnitsky’s comedy Good Boys again, and I’ve gotta tell ya — that movie really holds up. It’s just so well written, and the three leads are so perfectly cast. I’d love to see that movie get a sequel… but that’s probably a pipe dream.

Again, thanks for bearing with me over the next couple of weeks, as I have to find a new, somewhat affordable apartment in this godforsaken town, which means pounding the pavement in search of the best deal, etc. I appreciate your patience…

I’d also preach patience to those already criticizing director Emerald Fennell for casting Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights — as the role traditionally goes to an actor of color. I have no idea if Fennell plans to excise the theme of race altogether, but it sure would be nice if fans could wait to see what a filmmaker has in mind before slagging a movie sight unseen.

Of course, I realize that’s kind of my whole job here, but I would never avoid a movie due to a controversial casting choice — I always keep an open mind when I sit down to watch a movie, and I’m always hoping for the best rather than actively rooting for it to fail so I can slag it online. That’s less fun than it sounds, believe me…

By the way, I hear that Wuthering Heights is going to start shooting in January — around the same time that Season 3 of Euphoria is scheduled to begin shooting. For what it’s worth, I’m told that Elordi’s schedule is a bit looser than that of his female co-stars, so perhaps Elordi’s dashing but dastardly Nate Jacobs won’t get as much screen time as Rue (Zendaya), Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), Jules (Hunter Schaffer), Lexy (Maude Apatow), and Maddy (Alexa Demie).

In tonight’s newsletter, you’ll read my long-in-the-works list of actors whom HBO and James Gunn should be looking at to play John Stewart in Lanterns, which will star Kyle Chandler as a crotchety Hal Jordan. Plus, I take a look at Martin Scorsese’s schedule now that two projects he hoped to shoot this year have stalled — one about Jesus and the other about Italian Jesus, aka Frank Sinatra.

There are also stories about Amazon’s RoboCop series and the open casting call the streamer put out for its Legally Blonde series, Ben Stiller’s new pickleball movie, the fate of the new Hellboy movie, Disney’s warped corporate priorities, the hot new short film from Andrew Laurich, and the latest trailer for the Prime Video series Cross starring Aldis Hodge.
