Oscar Predictions: A24’s 'The Brutalist' May Be Long, But It's Looking Like a Strong Contender for Best Picture
Plus, Scott Stuber teams back up with Scarlett Johansson, Sydney Sweeney reunites with her 'Euphoria' co-star Colman Domingo, and my favorite films of 1994.
Happy Tuesday, folks!
The NBA’s regular season kicked off tonight, and after my world-champion Boston Celtics raised a league-leading 18th banner before the game while M83 played over the speakers, the champs proceeded to rain down a barrage of three-pointers on the poor New York Knicks, whom they beat by 23 points.
Meanwhile, the poor Buffalo Bills have yet to win a single Super Bowl, prompting the team’s Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Reed to partner with Buffalo-born actor Chad Michael Murray on a docuseries titled Just One Before I Die, which will follow the team’s tortured fanbase. My pal Kevin Polowy is co-directing the docuseries with fellow Buffalo native Addison Henderson, and hopefully, Reed and Murray’s involvement as EPs will help this interesting sports project land distribution.
And speaking of dying, Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. A terrible disease, and painful, too. But I’m sure he’ll have access to the finest medical care that prison has to offer… which is more than a lot of people get, and a lot more than he deserves.
Tonight, you’ll read my latest set of Oscar predictions and feast your eyes (and ears) on the first trailer for A24’s The Brutalist, which is going to be a major threat this awards season. I also offer up my personal favorite films of 1994 on the heels of a Rotten Tomatoes fan poll that had The Shawshank Redemption beating out Pulp Fiction — as if!
There are also items about Scott Stuber teaming up with Scarlett Johansson, Robert Pattinson returning to A24, Euphoria stars Sydney Sweeney and Colman Domingo joining forces on another scandalous new project, the Season 2 cast of Beef, and an update on Marvel’s Blade. Plus, we say goodbye to Interstellar producer Lynda Obst and veteran cinematographer Dick Pope.
