Exclusive: Ryan Gosling to Produce 'Killer Klowns from Outer Space' Remake for Amazon MGM Studios

Plus, Cate Blanchett threatens to retire, WB rolls out a viral marketing campaign for Zach Cregger's 'Weapons,' and A24 drops a teaser for Ari Aster's starry Western 'Eddington.'

Happy Monday, folks!

Last night, I had a blast watching Alyssa Edwards strut her stuff at the Belasco Theater. The foul-mouthed drag queen is enjoying a victory after winning the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars.

Earlier in the day, I rewatched Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag, which held up on second viewing. If anything, I think I may have undersold it after my first viewing, as it really is quite a delicious marital drama doubling as a crackling spy movie.

Coincidentally, Blanchett has begun to talk about “retirement” in interviews, as if anyone really retires from showbiz other than, say, Gene Hackman, who actually had the stones to do it.

Blanchett told the Radio Times (via World of Reel) that she is considering “giving up acting,” and that while her family “roll their eyes every time I say it,” there are “a lot of things I want to do with my life.”

Tell that to Soderbergh, who also publicized plans to retire, only to go on to direct two movies a year — including two of this year’s best movies in Black Bag and the unique ghost story Presence, which offers far more than a camera gimmick.

Up next for Blanchett are Jim Jarmusch’s Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, and the Zellner brothersAlpha Gang, and I can’t imagine she’ll end her career with those two films, as she strikes me as a far more tactical actress — Borderlands notwithstanding.

I also watched this week’s SNL — breakout star Aimee Lou Wood should probably lighten up about the show’s lighthearted White Lotus parody, The White Potus, which wasn’t so offensive that it required an apology — as well as a pair of new Black Mirror episodes. I thought Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones were excellent in “Common People,” a terrifying parable of our greedy healthcare system, while Issa Rae impressed me with her turn in “Hotel Reverie,” even if the overlong, largely black-and-white episode wasn’t entirely my cup of tea.

Finally, you’ll notice that Warner Bros. is starting to roll out viral marketing for Zach Cregger’s horror movie Weapons. I applaud the studio’s willingness to think outside the box, but a word of advice: Don’t get cute when you’ve got the goods.

Tonight, I’ve got a scoop about the latest project Ryan Gosling is developing at Amazon MGM Studios, plus a look at A24’s teaser for Ari Aster’s Cannes-bound Western starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, among others.

There are also items about the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain standing up to Meta, Lucy Hale heading to Netflix, a Severance star teaming up with Jamie Lee Curtis, the latest addition to the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, Tom Cruise’s new co-star, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ latest Amazon project, and a tribute to the late Nicky Katt, who made a strong impression in ensemble films such as Dazed and Confused and Boiler Room.
