Why the Supporting Acting Races Are Still Wide Open; Plus, a 'Wicked' Crazy Prediction - 'For Your Consideration'
Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff, and I discuss who's on the outside looking in as of Christmas Eve, and why I think 'Anora's Yura Borisov is the dark horse who could win.
On an all-new episode of For Your Consideration — Hollywood’s #1 awards-themed talk show — Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider revisit the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress races, where despite my earlier proclamation that Denzel Washington’s third Oscar win (for Gladiator II) was a “done deal,” nothing has been carved in stone.
Whoops! My bad, folks… it’s almost like it helps to see the movies before you have to talk about them. But the studios don’t exactly work on my timetable — but only because I don’t vote for some cockamamie awards that mean literally nothing.
To us, this race is between Zoe Saldana (Emilia Perez) and Ariana Grande (Wicked), though I think that Felicity Jones (The Brutalist) stands an outside shot to win.
Elsewhere, Isabella Rossellini (Conclave) and Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) are well-positioned this season, with Deadwyler poised to benefit from her earlier snub for Till, and Rossellini a beloved veteran from an iconic acting family who stands out as the only prominent woman in a cast full of men.
What that means for A Complete Unknown stars Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro is unclear…
As far as the Best Supporting Actor race is concerned, a lot of pundits believe that Kieran Culkin is gaining steam for A Real Pain, though others are rallying behind Guy Pearce’s supporting turn in The Brutalist, citing his history of strong performances, from L.A. Confidential to Memento.
Denzel Washington still feels like a likely nominee even though Gladiator II is losing steam in the Best Picture race, and his nomination could come at the expense of other Paramount contenders such as John Magaro and Peter Sarsgaard from September 5.
Everyone thinks that Anora’s Yura Borisov is going to make the cut, but only one of the FYC hosts believes he could go all the way — swept up in the momentum of Sean Baker’s modern fable.
Sing Sing’s Clarence Maclin was a tough cut for the panel, but watch the episode to find out why.
