You Better “Believe” 'Ted Lasso' Was Always Coming Back to Apple, Which Can’t Afford to Lose It Right Now
Plus, Eli Roth's new horror venture, Neill Blomkamp's reimagining of 'Starship Troopers,' and a look at the first trailer for Disney's 'Freaky Friday' sequel starring Lindsay Lohan.

Happy Saturday, folks!
I spent the day binging the new Tina Fey-Steve Carell series The Four Seasons on Netflix, though there’s probably an embargo in place, so you’ll have to wait for my review.
On Thursday night, I watched Fleur Fortuné’s indie movie The Assessment starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Olsen, and Himesh Patel, which I found to be disappointing, though the production design was excellent. I also watched Bill Burr’s new Hulu special Drop Dead Years, which ended as all comedy specials should — with someone yelling “Go Pats!”
On Friday, the trades confirmed my Thursday night scoops about Sony’s Single White Female reboot and HBO’s Lanterns, while my colleagues backed me up on A24’s Warfare.
Meanwhile, on my podcast The Hot Mic, I laid out the case for why Sadie Sink isn’t playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4, but rather, a version of Mary Jane. Still no confirmation, however, about the rumor making its way around town that Quentin Tarantino will return behind the camera sooner than many expected.
There are also some new Cannes rumors making the rounds via Variety, and an old rumor about Robert Pattinson circling an Altered States remake at Warner Bros. that I first asked the studio about three years ago, plus, the early box office numbers for this weekend, which is looking grim.
But that’s not why you guys subscribe to this newsletter. I’ve never been to Cannes and don’t care for its pomp and circumstance, and you and I both know that you can get more thoughtful box office analysis elsewhere.
I focus on development, so tonight, you’ll read about Ted Lasso coming back to Apple TV+ and Sony ordering a new take on Starship Troopers from Neill Blomkamp, who directed District 9, Elysium, Chappie, and Gran Turismo for the studio. Read the caption of the photo on that story for my pick to replace Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico.
There are also items about Eli Roth’s new horror venture, Peyton Manning tackling a new movie role, Kate Mara teaming up with the creator of True Detective, David Corenswet’s new co-star, the latest addition to Colleen Hoover’s new movie, the villain in Guy Ritchie’s next film, and a look at Disney’s Freaky Friday sequel that reunites Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay “Don’t Call it a Comeback!” Lohan.
